How it works

From a drawer of old devices to one verified archive

Every project follows the same six steps, whether it is one laptop or a whole family’s archive. How long it takes depends on how many devices there are and what condition they are in. You will be told in your quote.

§ 01 — The six steps

Careful, in order.

Nothing at our end is deleted until you have checked the archive. You can see which step your project is on at any time.

  1. Assess

We list every device, check its condition without writing anything to it, and estimate how much is on each one. You get a plain written recommendation and a fixed quote before any work begins.

  2. Preserve

Each device is read with read-only methods. A drive that shows signs of failure is imaged once, carefully, so the original is not worked on again and again.

  3. Consolidate

Files from every device come together in one place. Duplicates are reduced and folders are organised by year and by person. Nothing is silently thrown away.

  4. Migrate

The archive goes where you decide: your own Google Drive, OneDrive or iCloud account, a new external drive that you keep, or both.

  5. Verify

File counts and sizes are compared between source and destination, and files are checksummed where the destination allows. You receive a verification report and review the archive yourself.

  6. Protect

After your review and the agreed retention period, our temporary working copies are securely deleted and you receive a deletion certificate. Your devices come back to you.

§ 02 — Step by step, in detail

What we do, what you do, what you receive.

Most of the work is ours. The parts that need you are few: telling us what matters, choosing where the archive goes, and checking it before anything is deleted.

  1. Assess

    What we do
List and tag every device, photograph it, check its condition without writing anything to it, and estimate what is on it.
    What you do
Tell us what matters most: which years, which people, which devices. Bring everything you can find, including devices that no longer switch on.
    What you receive
A plain written recommendation and a fixed quote. Work begins only after you accept it.
  2. Preserve

    What we do
Read each device with read-only methods, one at a time. A drive that shows signs of failure is imaged once, so the original is not worked on again and again.
    What you do
Nothing, unless we have a question. Please do not keep trying a failing drive yourself.
    What you receive
Progress on your status page as the project moves through its stages.
  3. Consolidate

    What we do
Bring files from every device together, reduce duplicates and organise folders by year and by person. Nothing is silently thrown away.
    What you do
Tell us how you would like things organised, if you have a preference.
    What you receive
One organised archive, ready to move to its destination.
  4. Migrate

    What we do
Move the archive to the destination you chose: your own Google Drive, OneDrive or iCloud account, a new external drive that you keep, or both.
    What you do
Choose the destination. If it is a cloud account, make sure it has enough space.
    What you receive
Your archive, in your account or on your drive.
  5. Verify

    What we do
Compare file counts and sizes between source and destination, and checksum files where the destination allows.
    What you do
Review the archive yourself. Open the folders, look for the photos and documents you care about, and tell us if anything seems missing.
    What you receive
A verification report, written for people rather than engineers.
  6. Protect

    What we do
After your review and the agreed retention period, securely delete our temporary working copies and return your devices.
    What you do
Check the archive before wiping any of your original devices.
    What you receive
A deletion certificate, and your devices back.

§ 05 — While your devices are with us

Every device gets its own record.

Each device is tagged and photographed when it arrives, and kept in locked storage when nobody is working on it. Every movement is added to a chain-of-custody record. The sheet beside this is a specimen of that record, not a real customer’s.

A technician wearing an anti-static wrist strap holds a bare hard drive by its edges over a dark anti-static mat, where three other drives wait with paper tags tied to them.
