LegacyData by Kamyab · Home & family data preservation

What happens to 20 years of your digital life when an old computer stops working?

LegacyData gathers the photos, documents and memories scattered across your family’s old laptops, phones and drives, and preserves them in one verified archive that you own.

See how it works

  • Your files are never used to train AI.
  • You choose where your archive goes.
  • Nothing at our end is deleted until you have checked.

§ 01 — A life in devices

Twenty years of digital life rarely lives in one place.

Every few years, a new device. The old one goes into a drawer and takes a slice of your life with it. LegacyData brings every slice back into one archive.

§ 02 — The problem

Your data probably isn’t lost. It is scattered.

A laptop from 2012. An old Android in a drawer. An external disk nobody has plugged in for years. A few USB sticks, an old Mac, a Google Drive that is nearly full. Most families have a lifetime of memories spread across devices that are quietly getting older.

How to save data from an old computer

§ 03 — What is really on those devices

Not files. Years.

family photos your children’s early years weddings financial documents old projects videos emails scanned certificates family history

Much of it exists nowhere else. It deserves to be handled with care — whether you do it yourself, or we do it for you.

Printed family photographs — a wedding garland, a birthday cake, a beach, an elderly couple’s hands — spread on a cream cloth around an old smartphone with a cracked screen.
Fig. 3A few of these were printed. Most of the photos on that phone never were.

§ 04 — How it works

Six careful steps, in order.

Every project follows the same path, whether it is one laptop or a whole family’s archive. You can see which step yours is on at any time, using your project reference.

The full process, step by step

  1. Assess

We list every device, check its condition without writing anything to it, and estimate how much is on each one. You get a plain written recommendation and a fixed quote before any work begins.

  2. Preserve

Each device is read with read-only methods. A drive that shows signs of failure is imaged once, carefully, so the original is not worked on again and again.

  3. Consolidate

Files from every device come together in one place. Duplicates are reduced and folders are organised by year and by person. Nothing is silently thrown away.

  4. Migrate

The archive goes where you decide: your own Google Drive, OneDrive or iCloud account, a new external drive that you keep, or both.

  5. Verify

File counts and sizes are compared between source and destination, and files are checksummed where the destination allows. You receive a verification report and review the archive yourself.

  6. Protect

After your review and the agreed retention period, our temporary working copies are securely deleted and you receive a deletion certificate. Your devices come back to you.

§ 05 — Trust & privacy

Would you hand a stranger fifteen years of your children’s photos? Neither would we.

So here are our commitments, in writing. Privacy is not a feature added at the end — it is how the work is organised, from the moment a device arrives to the day our copies are deleted.

  1. Your data remains yours. We claim no rights over your files. The archive belongs to you from the first byte to the last.
  2. You choose where it goes.Your own cloud account, a new drive you keep, or both. We do not hold on to your archive.
  3. We do not train AI on your files.Your files are never used to train AI, and content-level AI inspection is not enabled.
  4. We do not casually browse your files.Files are handled as data to copy and verify. Opening one is limited to confirming a copy is readable, and only with your agreement.
  5. Working copies have an end date.Temporary copies are kept for a defined period — 30 days by default — so you can check everything.
  6. Every migration is verified.Counts and sizes are compared before anything is called finished, and you review the result yourself.
  7. Every device is tracked. Each device is tagged on arrival and every movement is written to a chain-of-custody record.
  8. Staff access is controlled.Only the people working on your project can open it, and their access is logged.
  9. Passwords are not casually stored. If a device needs a password, it is used for the job and not kept in notes, chats or email.
  10. Temporary copies are securely deleted. At the end of the retention period our working copies are erased and you receive a deletion certificate.

§ 06 — What you are paying for

Why a complete archive can be worth ₹25,000

You are not paying for a copy-and-paste. You are paying for a careful, supervised process where every device is accounted for, failing media is handled safely, and nothing is deleted until you have checked the result.

Complete Digital Archive Project · from₹25,000

Smaller jobs start from ₹1,500.

  1. Device inventoryEvery device and drive logged, tagged and photographed on arrival.
  2. Health assessmentCondition checked before reading starts, so failing media is handled differently.
  3. Safe readingRead-only methods. Fragile drives imaged once rather than read over and over.
  4. Data inventoryWhat is on each device, roughly how much, and which parts matter to you.
  5. ConsolidationYears of folders brought together, duplicates reduced, nothing silently dropped.
  6. MigrationMoved to your chosen destination and organised so you can find things.
  7. VerificationCounts and sizes compared; a report written for people, not engineers.
  8. Customer reviewYou check the archive before anything at our end is deleted.
  9. Secure deletionWorking copies erased after the retention period, with a certificate.

The final price depends on how many devices and drives there are, how much data they hold in total, their physical condition, how complex the work is (old formats, encryption, damaged media), where the archive is going and how much organisation you would like. You get a fixed quote after the assessment, before any work begins.

Services & pricing

§ 08 — Services

Clear starting prices. Honest quotes.

Every project begins with an assessment, so the quote reflects your devices rather than a guess. Prices are in Indian rupees; GST is added where applicable.

What each service includes

  • Data Health Assessment

We examine your devices, check their health safely, and tell you plainly what is on them, what is at risk and what it would take to preserve it.

    From₹1,500

  • Single Device Migration

One old laptop, phone or drive, carefully read and moved to the destination you choose, then verified.

    From₹4,500

  • Family Data Consolidation

Several devices from across the family brought together into one organised, de-duplicated archive.

    From₹12,500

  • Complete Digital Archive Project

Twenty years of digital life, from every device you can find, preserved as one verified archive you own.

    From₹25,000

  • Data Recovery

For devices that no longer work normally. Recovery depends on the physical condition of the media, so we assess first and quote honestly.

§ 09 — Questions

Plain answers.

Do you look through my photos and documents?

No. We work with your files as data to be copied and verified, not content to be browsed. Opening a file is limited to what is needed to confirm a copy is readable, and only where you have agreed to it.

Do you use AI on my files?

No. Your files are never used to train AI and content-level AI inspection is not enabled. We use software to copy, count and verify data; people supervise every step.

Where does my data end up?

Wherever you choose: your own Google Drive, OneDrive or iCloud account, a new external drive you keep, or a combination. The archive is yours. We do not keep it.

What happens to the copies you make while working?

We keep a temporary working copy only for the retention period agreed in your project (30 days by default) so you can check everything. After that it is securely deleted and we issue a deletion certificate.

My hard drive is clicking. Should I keep trying to open it?

Please stop. Repeatedly powering on a clicking drive can make recovery harder. Unplug it and keep it somewhere safe until it has been assessed.

Why does a full archive project cost ₹25,000 or more?

Because most of the work is careful, supervised time: inventorying devices, reading failing media safely, consolidating years of files, migrating, and verifying every copy before anything is deleted. The final price depends on the number of devices, data volume and condition.

Can I do this myself?

Often, yes. Our free checklist and guides show you how. If you would rather not spend the weekends it takes, or the devices are fragile, we can do it for you.

How do I know what stage my project is at?

Every project has a reference number such as KDC-000123. You can sign in to the status page with your email address at any time to see progress, quotes, payments and documents.
